AS4: The Royal Tenenbaums - Living Room Scene

The Royal Tenenbaums Scene Analysis
The Film, “The Royal Tenenbaums” directed by Wes Anderson is an open discussion of dysfunctional families. The scene I have chosen is an extremely significant scene within the film because it showcases themes of family, separation and isolation through the use of colour and composition and deliberate direction.
In this scene, we see Richie and Margot in the living room with their father Royal Tenenbaum having a conversation about how he wants to mend the broken relationship with his children. In this particular frame, composition assists the storytelling. The position of each character reinforces the lack of a deep connection with the father. Chas is at the door and very distant, as he is the most uncomfortable with his father moving back in. Whereas, Richie and Margot are a lot closer to Royal and are more cooperative.
The use of warm colours in the scene adds a sense of cosiness common to a home and associated with family and close relationships. This is an extreme juxtaposition of the current state of the household where each member of the family is disconnected and separated from their father. The deliberate direction of this scene along with composition help tell that story which makes this a significant scene within the film.
As can be seen through the axonometric drawing, the use of colour elaborately expresses the mood and emotion from the scene. According to colour theory, warmer tones like red symbolise love and passion whilst yellows represent happiness joy and excitement. With this in mind, it can be understood that colour has a huge impact on the meaning of the story, Hence, the deliberate use of colour by Wes Anderson in this scene from “The Royal Tenenbaums” enhances the impact of the story making it a iconic and significant scene.
In essence, Anderson’s film is a perfect example of how architecture and design can be utilised to enhance the outcome of a story and overall impact of the plot. This is evident in this particular scene of the film. It is important to observe the use of colour and composition in Anderson’s film in order to empower a story’s ability to captivate an emotional response from an audience. Directors need to watch this film and other films by Anderson, if they want to understand how colour can have colossal impacts on a film.
